Coronavirus testing up in Virginia; percentage of positive cases continues to drop, state data shows

More coronavirus tests are being given in Virginia, and the percentage of those tests that come back positive continues to decline, state data shows.

As of Saturday, a reported 528,914 tests had been done in the state — an increase of 18,984 new tests reported from the previous day, according to data from the Virginia Department of Health.

The seven-day percentage of positive tests dipped Saturday — albeit slightly — to 7%.

The state Department of Health reported 650 new coronavirus cases from Friday to Saturday. There have been a total of 57,443 cases of COVID-19 in Virginia: 54,953 of them confirmed cases and 2,490 probable ones — which means they’re symptomatic and have a known exposure to the illness.

Some 1,607 people have died of the illness in the state, up five from Friday.

People over the age of 80 represent the highest number of deaths with 824, followed by those in their 70s, who have seen 404 deaths. But it’s people in their 30s who have the highest number of cases — 10,687 — when compared to the other age brackets. Those in their 40s have the second highest number of cases: 10,388.

A total of 880 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in the state, including 577 confirmed cases and 303 with coronavirus test results pending, according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

The number of confirmed COVID-19 patients who have been discharged: 7,607.

Here’s a breakdown of the number of cases and deaths in the region, by locality:

  • Accomack County: 1,024 cases since the pandemic began (up 2 from Friday); 14 total deaths (no change from Friday)
  • Virginia Beach: 956 cases (up 6); 27 deaths (no change)
  • Chesapeake: 721 cases (up 12); 16 deaths (no change)
  • Norfolk: 723 cases (up 16); 7 deaths (no change)
  • Portsmouth: 405 cases (no change); 13 deaths (no change)
  • Suffolk: 356 cases (up 3); 34 deaths (no change)
  • Hampton: 258 cases (up 6); 5 deaths (no change)
  • Newport News: 430 cases (up 20); 10 deaths (no change)
  • James City County: 239 cases (up 1); 15 deaths (no change)
  • Isle of Wight: 161 cases (up 2); 8 deaths (no change)
  • Northampton County: 268 cases (up 1); 27 deaths (no change)
  • Poquoson: 14 cases (up 2); no deaths
  • York: 98 cases (up 1); 3 deaths (no change)
  • Williamsburg: 54 cases (no change); 5 deaths (no change)
