Power of women artists on display at Norfolk’s d’Art Center

NORFOLK — Female artistic power is on full display at d’Art Center with an immersive installation that displays the names of more than 100 women.

The installation, “Notice,” is the brainchild of Lori Pratico, the founder of Girl Noticed Inc., who has painted the names, from floor to ceiling, in different fonts and colors.

Ten of the names are of female-identifying artists whom Pratico views as having helped to shape art history, including abstract artists Alma Thomas and Georgia O’Keeffe, both known for creating abstract paintings from nature.

The menagerie of the names pays homage to female virtuosity. Its design signifies a lack of promotion afforded to, and a lack of value placed on, female artists’ work throughout history, reads a news release. The display is intended to spark viewers to reflect on the value of women in today’s society.

Three names were added after winners of the juried exhibition “Persistence” were announced last week.

  • Justine Fischer, Washington, D.C., first place for a mixed media artwork titled “Wanted.” It was made from a walnut panel and vinyl.
  • Greta Ruiz, Santa Fe, New Mexico, second place for “Sisters,” a high-fired stoneware vase.
  • Jenny Davis, Fairfax, third place for “Reckoning,” a watercolor painting.

“Persistence” has been an annual d’Art Center exhibition since 2019, featuring works from female artists from across the country, but this year’s will be the final show. It’ll include 66 pieces by 60 artists from 23 states.

“Notice” will be at the d’Art Center through April 11.

Pratico also left a visible mark on Norfolk in 2018, when she painted a mural of four Norfolk women leaders, on Olney Road near the Neon District. (The building, set at the time for demolition, is gone now.)
