Need a good laugh? Virginia Beach’s Funny Bone Comedy Club is back in business.

Comedian Aries Spears performs Jan. 8-10 at the Virginia Beach Funny Bone Comedy Club.

Virginia Beach — If 2020 showed us anything, it’s that we could all do with a little extra laughter in our lives.

While most venues and theaters remain closed due to the coronavirus, Virginia Beach’s Funny Bone Comedy Club is back in business, armed with a calendar full of familiar faces and even some new events, like an online comedy school and a special event promising laughs good enough to knock the mask off your face.

Of course, your venture into the club won’t look or feel like it used to.

In light of the ongoing pandemic, the club has changed the way it sells tickets and seats guests, and has added pre-screening measures for staff and guests.

Social distancing and masks are required at all times, unless you’re eating or drinking at your table. Temperatures will be checked upon arrival, and if yours is too high, expect to be sent home.

Instead of selling individual tickets, fans are now given the choice of buying an entire table for either two or four people, which means no more rubbing elbows with strangers inside the club.

Want to sit closer to the stage? Buy your tickets as early as possible. Tables are assigned by purchase date.

Comedian Aries Spears is this week’s headliner. In a recent interview with the Orlando Sentinel, the “Mad TV” alum said that performing during the pandemic has been surreal.

“There are some people who are wearing masks, others who are not. I always tell people I want them to do whatever they feel they got to do to be comfortable,” he told the Sentinel. “But if I’m being honest, it sucks. Because comedy is just a very intimate exercise. You want to connect with them, and they want to connect with you. And it helps to see them smile, and it helps to see their teeth.”

Spears also said his stand-up style is old school and touches on everything from politics to his personal life.

“I’m definitely not a part of the cancel culture,” he told the Sentinel. “So if you like George Carlin, if you like Richard Pryor, if you’re from that ′70s, ′80s, early ′90s era, that’s what you should expect.”

Upcoming events include performances by Tony Roberts, Earthquake Michael Blackson and Tony Rock.
