The manager's special (whiting, potato salad, green beans and a dinner roll) at Reynolds Cafe in downtown Suffolk.

SUFFOLK — Reynolds Café in downtown Suffolk celebrated its grand opening almost a year ago.

Owners Marvin and Pamela Reynolds ran a catering business for eight years before opening the restaurant, which is located in the former Homer’s Drive-In.

It serves breakfast, lunch and dinner items such as salmon cakes, hamburgers and fried chicken. Daily specials include two sides and a dinner roll. A kids menu is also available.

The restaurant is more of a take-out spot but has some seating (two booths and three bar stools). The red table and chairs with accented yellow walls make it feel cheerful.

I dined in. I ordered the fried fish (three whiting fillets) special and selected the potato salad and string beans as my sides. It came with a dinner roll and hot sauce.

Call ahead to place a to-go order and to hear the manager’s specials. It gets busy around lunchtime and some items may run out. Check Reynolds’ social media as well.

The fillets were lightly battered, seasoned well and crispy. The salt did not kill my taste buds; nor did I detect a fishy taste. Delicious.

I took my time with the creamy potato salad. It had a hint of sweetness and crunch from the relish, which I liked.

The string beans tasted as if they came from a can — plain with no meat or spices. They were OK and satisfied my need for something green. I would try them again because my mama told me once to eat my vegetables.

Several customers got the beef hot dogs with fries. I added them to my list for next time.
