Three Republicans will compete to face Del. Nancy Guy

Virginia Beach — The Virginia Beach House of Delegates representative who narrowly won her seat is expecting another competitive election year.

Three Republicans will face off in a June primary for a chance to challenge Democrat Del. Nancy Guy of the 83rd House District.

Del. Nancy Guy of Virginia Beach is running for re-election in the 2021 83rd House of Delegates race.

After a very competitive race in which each candidate raised more than $1 million, Guy booted Chris Stolle from office in 2019. Stolle seeks to reclaim his seat, and is joined by two political newcomers in a bid to take on Guy in November.

Since her election, Guy helped Democrats pass sweeping legislation that has had wide support from their base. She has cast votes to abolish the death penalty; decriminalize marijuana; raise the minimum wage to $12 by 2023; and to require criminal background checks on gun sales.

All of the Republican candidates think they have a path to unseat Guy.

Stolle said he expects all eyes will be on the race, and it will be just as expensive as the last one.

To determine which candidate will face Guy, the Republicans will hold a primary race among Stolle, Tim Anderson, an attorney and gun shop owner, and Phil Kazmierczak, a real estate broker and a former member of the U.S. Army Reserve.

It will be the only Republican primary for Virginia Beach House races this year.

Virginia Beach Republican Party Chair Bill Curtis said the party did not plan to endorse for the primary.

“We have three outstanding candidates that are competing head-to-head,” Curtis said. “That district would be well situated with any of the three of them.”

Stolle, 63, held the 83rd House of Delegates seat from 2010-20. If reelected, Stolle said he would focus on helping residents and businesses return to full employment after more than a year of the pandemic.

Like Guy, Stolle grew up in Virginia Beach and graduated from Cox High School. His brothers are Commonwealth’s Attorney Colin Stolle and Virginia Beach Sheriff Ken Stolle.

Stolle is the vice president of medical affairs at Riverside Health System in Newport News, where he serves as a liaison between the medical staff and administration. He previously worked as a gynecologist and he also spent 24 years working for the Navy.

Stolle and his wife, Lisa, a former marine, live in the Saw Pen Point neighborhood and have five adult children and two granddaughters.

Tim Anderson, 46, is an attorney who says he has spent his career “working to maintain law and order.” He lives in the Wishart Lake neighborhood in the Bayside district with his wife, Amy, and two kids and one stepchild.

He began making waves in the conservative political scene last year after he led an effort to recall State Sen. Louise Lucas, whom he accused of inciting a riot on the day Portsmouth’s Confederate monument was heavily damaged and a demonstrator was seriously injured.

Last year, Lucas filed a defamation lawsuit against Anderson saying he damaged her character. The lawsuit is still pending in Portsmouth Circuit Court. After he was sued, Anderson said he felt as if he had been thrust into Virginia politics overnight.

Since then, he has represented other elected officials, including Amanda Chase, a Virginia state senator who filed a federal lawsuit earlier this year asking a judge to toss out her legislative colleagues’ decision to censure her for a “pattern of unacceptable conduct.”

If elected, Anderson said he would fight to put limits on campaign spending and advocate for term limits.

Anderson filed for chapter 7 bankruptcy in 2000. The court records have been archived and were not immediately available, but Anderson said he had credit card debt from helping to pay for his father’s cancer treatments.

Over the past year, Guy has raised more than $180,000 in preparation to fend off Republican challengers, while Stolle raised $74,079; followed by $67,621 for Anderson and $19,583 for Kazmierczak.
