Two men will compete to represent portions of Virginia Beach and Chesapeake in the 81st House District.

Republican Barry Knight, a hog farmer and agricultural bureau board member, has held the seat since 2009 and has vowed to support the local economy and protect citizens’ rights. According to his website, Knight aims to support agriculture legislation, ensure second amendment rights, lower taxes, promote parental rights in education and provide access to an affordable college education or vocational school.

His opponent Democrat Jeffrey Feld, also known as Doc, is committed to “supporting local businesses, protecting the environment, and securing the 81st District’s future.” Feld’s platform, according to his campaign’s website, intends to prioritize quality education and healthcare, reduce property flooding and damage, and support small businesses and create new jobs.

Knight’s predecessor flipped the seat red in 1999. In the last election, Knight won by roughly 4% in the competitive district.

If elected, what would be your top priority and how would you get it done?

My top priority is to represent my constituents to the best of my ability. I work for them, and I listen and go to Richmond to fight for their priorities.

As a budget conferee, I am in a good position to advocate for citizens and deliver good government at the lowest possible cost. We should look at eliminating the grocery tax, which is a regressive tax, hurting those who can least afford it.

Veterans and their families should receive the support, care, and recognition they have earned. Many states have eliminated the tax on veterans’ retirement, so that is a priority. I am also proud to have secured our correctional officers and sheriff Sheriff deputies a $3,000 bonus for their hard work.

These fiscal issues are a top priority in our district, and I will lead on this and other issues important to constituents if I am returned to the House.

Focusing on equitable education, ensuring accessible healthcare, finding and enacting solutions that mitigate and prevent flooding are my priority. Your zip code shouldn’t determine the education you receive. Sometimes students are left behind — that needs to change.

Furthermore, I’ll fight for transparent billing, protecting pre-existing conditions, and fairer insurance practices. People know that I’m outspoken, lead with my heart while having a calm and rational approach to tasks. I’m independent-minded and not beholden to anyone or any group. I will not shift opinions just because the wind blows. My opponent hasn’t fought to protect your homes, wants to take money away from public schools, and didn’t stand up to the healthcare industry in the middle of a global pandemic.

This election, vote for someone who will fight for you and your family. I believe that we must make the best decisions for our community and the commonwealth. Commonwealth.
