Virginia Beach will consider cutting back public parking hours in resort area neighborhoods

No parking 8 p.m. to 6 a.m., except by permit only sign at 16th Street and Arctic Avenue in Virginia Beach on Feb. 23, 2016.

VIRGINIA BEACH — Residents who live near the Oceanfront resort area have a hard time finding a place to park in front of their homes when they return from work on summer evenings, according to members of the Resort Beach Civic League.

To help alleviate the problem, the City Council will consider changing the start time of a permit parking program in residential neighborhoods including Old Beach, Resort Beach and Shadowlawn.

Currently, on-street parking is limited to permit holders between 8 p.m. and 6 a.m. The Resort Beach Civic League has requested to change the start time to 6 p.m.

Violators could face a $70 citation.

The City Council will vote on the matter Tuesday, and if approved, it will be effective July 1.

In other parking news, residents of Cavalier Shores, the neighborhood next to the Cavalier Hotel property, want to continue limiting on-street public parking in the 200 blocks of 43rd, 44th and 45th streets.

The four-hour restrictive parking was first approved in a one-year pilot program in 2019 and has been extended each year since. It’s set to expire later this month.

Hotel construction, which initially prompted the limit due to workers taking up parking spaces, is complete, but the civic league is concerned about employees parking in front of residents’ homes.

On Tuesday, the City Council will vote on whether to again extend the four-hour limit, but this time the limit would be in place for three years.
