Residential parking permits will be required from 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. in resort area neighborhoods including Old Beach, Resort Beach and Shadowlawn.

Free public parking is currently allowed from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. daily.

The change to the city’s Residential Parking Permit Program will be effective starting July 1. Parking will continue to be restricted to permit holders only 24 hours a day during holiday weekends.

The City Council on Tuesday also approved a three-year extension of restrictive public parking in the Cavalier Shores neighborhood, north of the Cavalier Hotel property.

Parking will continue to be limited to 4 hours in the 200 blocks of 43rd, 44th and 45th streets.

Skip Gibson, vice president of the North Beach Civic League, told the City Council the organization wanted Cavalier Shores to be part of the city’s Residential Parking Permit program.

North End resident Billy Almond said the restrictive hours push parking north and urged the council to delay the decision until more data could be collected.

Councilman Worth Remick, who represents the district, voiced his support of the four-hour limit, saying it’s justified based on the amount of activity at the Cavalier Hotel property.

Council member Barbara Henley was the lone vote against it.
