Virginia Beach — Virginia Beach residents who have been unemployed at some point during the COVID-19 pandemic are eligible for personal real estate and personal property tax relief.

The deadline to apply is Jan. 31. The program was created by the city to provide financial assistance to those who have lost their jobs, been furloughed or experienced a reduction in work due to COVID-19.

Since the city began providing tax relief in July, it has provided more than $800,000 in tax relief for 1,610 Virginia Beach households, said Department of Human Services Director Aileen Smith. Each recipient has received up to $500 in relief for real estate taxes for primary residences, and a maximum of $250 for personal property taxes.

Applicants must provide proof of residency dating back to March 1, 2020, a copy of their 2020 real estate or personal property tax bills, and a copy of a Virginia Employment Commission award letter or bank statement showing the applicant received unemployment assistance as a result of the pandemic.

Residents who have returned to full-time work are still eligible to apply. Self-employed or gig workers may also qualify if they can prove loss of work.

“I would strongly encourage any member of our community who may be eligible to submit an application if they have not already done so,” Smith said in a statement. “All applications will be considered, and our team will work with individuals who have unique circumstances to determine their eligibility until the application window closes.”

Applications can be submitted on the city’s website at VBgov.com/COVID19TaxRelief. Questions may be directed to VBTaxRelief@vbgov.com.
