4 police officers honored with Congressional Medal of Bravery for role in Virginia Beach mass shooting

Virginia Beach — Four Virginia Beach police officers will receive the Congressional Medal of Bravery on Friday afternoon, in recognition of their role in the Virginia Beach mass shooting.

City and state leaders — among them Sen. Mark Warner and Rep. Elaine Luria — will present the award. The ceremony will begin at 3:15 p.m. in the Sandler Center for the Performing Arts.

A gunman shot and killed 12 people May 31, 2019, and injured five others — including a Virginia Beach police officer, who the perpetrator shot in his bulletproof vest. Virginia Beach officers eventually killed the gunman in a shootout.

A release from the city did not name the officers receiving the medal.

Mayor Bobby Dyer, City Manager Patrick Duhaney, Police Chief Paul Neudigate and Raj Parekh, acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District, will also be in attendance.
