Monster trucks are coming to Virginia Beach

They say great things come in small packages. I believe that’s true for jewelry but not for cars.

There are two types of car people: big cars (trucks) or small cars. I started off as a small car person. My first car was a Honda Accord hatchback, and I loved the sporty look and its easy maneuverability. However, I was transformed to a truck fan once I had kids. At first, I was scared to be so high off the ground. Now, I feel inferior in a small car.

I like big trucks, I cannot lie. When a big truck pulls up beside me, I take a glance. Yes, I do. There’s something tough, strong and durable about a big truck. I like the fat wheels, the height and the solid frame. Many people prefer small sporty cars. I get it. They’re pretty. I’m just not a fancy car person. They look good but do nothing else, especially the two seaters. A big truck can carry furniture, golf clubs, kids, vacation gear, etc. Also, I’m a safety nerd. I feel 10 times safer high off the ground in a big fat truck.

So, let’s talk monster trucks. Oh, yeah! They take big cars to another level. It’s like a supersized car or a big kid’s toy for the road. Monster trucks have evolved to custom built racing machines. These massive vehicles weigh upward of 12,000 pounds and are fast and agile. They cost $200,000-$250,000, and each truck is unique with its own design features. Most stand at 12 feet tall and can crush cars, so they really are the monsters of the road. So, if you’re into big monster trucks, then come watch eight of these monster vehicles battle it out on the sand at the “24th Annual Pungo Offroad Monsters on the Beach.”

On May 19-21, you can watch these trucks on a race and stunt course from the bleachers of the Boardwalk. They will battle for individual race honors as well as “King of the Beach.”

Also, spectators can sign up for a one-of-a-kind Monster Experience, which includes riding in a monster truck over dips, bumps and jumps. The weekend will feature a “Show and Shine” truck show, exhibitor displays and free family activities.
