What a trip: Spain

SPAIN — Spain / submitted by Sheldon Fineman of Virginia Beach

On Mallorca, a Mediterranean island off Spain, centuries-old olive trees dot the landscape.

In April, my daughter, Kelly, and I traveled to Mallorca, a Mediterranean island off Spain, to hike with Country Walkers for a week. The weather was flawless, with beautiful scenery everywhere. Ancient buildings, monasteries and towns from Roman, Arabic and Christian times decorated the island. But what stood out was the abundance of flora, with blooms and flowers everywhere accompanied by fragrant aromas that added to the experience. What intrigued me were the centuries-old, tortured, spindly and pretzeled olive trees that dotted the landscape. How they could be alive and still produce olives was enigmatic.
