It is unclear whether the two incidents are related.

Cummings and his roommate, Jake Carey, were shot inside their home that Friday morning in June. Both were 20 years old.

Carey was taken to Sentara Norfolk General with serious injuries but survived the shooting.

Cummings was a student at Old Dominion University, studying criminal justice. His father, James Cummings, told The Pilot in 2011 his son’s role models were former President Barack Obama and his uncle, the late U.S. Rep. Elijah Cummings, of Baltimore.

The 20-year-old Cummings dreamed of attending law school. Family and friends described him as polite, goal-oriented and caring because he always wanted to make everyone around him happy.
