Virginia Beach — Police believe speed and alcohol may have been contributing factors in a fatal crash early Saturday on Oceana Boulevard.
At 2:59 a.m., emergency dispatchers received a call reporting a single-vehicle crash near the intersection of Oceana Boulevard and Louisa Avenue.
Police said the driver was heading northbound on Oceana Boulevard, ran off the right side of the road and struck a tree.
The driver exited the vehicle but a passenger died inside, police said in a statement. The vehicle was severely damaged, so fire crews needed extensive time to remove the passenger.
The identities of the car occupants were not released.
