Man arrested following hit-and-run death of Virginia police captain

Police tape is seen in this file photo.

Police on Sunday arrested a motorist now charged in a hit-and-run crash in central Virginia in which a pedestrian — an off-duty officer — died.

Justin Thomas Regensburg, 30, of Chesterfield County, was taken into custody just before midday, according to the Henrico County Police Department. He was in the Henrico County Regional Jail West with no bond listed, charged with two felony hit-and-run counts, according to jail records. The Henrico sheriff’s office said Sunday it had no information about whether Regensburg has an attorney.

Regensburg was wanted in Saturday’s collision, in which Henrico County Police Capt. Donald Lambert Jr. died at the scene near Hanover County Municipal Airport, according to the police department. Lambert served with Henrico police for 33 years and was captain of the department’s Special Operations group.

“We are deeply saddened at the tragic and untimely loss of Capt. Lambert,” Chief of Police Eric English said Saturday in a news release, calling him a “selfless leader, mentor and friend who served our community with pride and dedication.”
