3 juveniles killed in Portsmouth in separate shootings over 26 hours; 2 others critically wounded

Police are looking for a Nissian Altima, 2019 or newer, in connection with a shooting that killed a boy Friday in Portsmouth.

Portsmouth — A 16-year-old boy was shot and killed in Portsmouth late Friday — bringing to three the number of minors killed in the city over the past two days.

Two other juveniles were critically wounded in the same time period.

The shootings took place during four separate incidents over a 26-hour stretch from Thursday evening into Friday night. The three slain juveniles were 14, 16 and 17 years old — all of them boys — while the two with critical injuries are boys aged 15 and 17.

A 16-year-old boy was arrested in one of the shootings, with no arrests so far made in the other four.

The bloodshed began when a 17-year-old boy was found at 9:32 p.m. Thursday with “a critical gunshot wound” in the 2900 block of Elm Avenue.

He died at a local hospital.

Then, at 2:31 p.m. Friday, dispatchers got a call about a shooting in the 2900 block of Berkley Avenue, off Turnpike Road.

A boy was critically wounded, and medics drove him to a local hospital where he died, police said.

“The victim is 14-years-old and he is not known to the neighborhood as anything more than a good kid,” Portsmouth Police spokeswoman Victoria Varnedoe wrote in an email.

Police were looking for a vehicle that had at least three occupants inside at the time of the shooting. They said Saturday that they found the Nissan Altima near the 1500 block of Columbus Avenue, but no one has been arrested.

“We have no description of the occupants,” Varndeoe wrote.

At 10:57 p.m. Friday, police said, two boys were victims of “a gunshot wound incident” in the 1700 block of South Street.

A 16-year-old boy was found dead, while a 17-year-old boy was critically wounded, according to a news release. The second boy was taken to a local hospital.

Police are looking for a black Lincoln Navigator SUV, saying that at least two suspects were in the vehicle at the time of the incident.

About an hour later, at 11:52 p.m., police responded to a shooting less than a mile away, in the 280 block of Dale Drive.

Officers said a 15-year-old boy was found at the scene with a critical gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital for treatment, according to a release.

Police have arrested a 16-year-old boy in that shooting, charging him with malicious wounding and gun charges, police said.
