Suffolk teacher charged with making more than a dozen straw purchases of guns

A Suffolk Public Schools teacher was arrested Thursday and charged with purchasing guns and providing them to someone who is not allowed to buy them.

The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives noted suspicious firearm transactions and alerted the Suffolk Police Department. The investigation led them to Jennifer Nicole McDonald-Awolowo, 40, who is accused of making more than a dozen straw purchases of guns for someone legally ineligible to buy them.

Police have not named the person McDonald-Awolowo was providing the guns to, nor shared details about why the guns were being purchased. The investigation is ongoing.

McDonald-Awolowo, who is a sixth grade teacher at Forest Glen Middle School according to the Suffolk Pubic Schools website, is charged with 12 felony counts of purchasing a firearm and providing it to an ineligible person. She is being held without bond at Western Tidewater Regional Jail.
