2 Portsmouth men arrested in connection with April killing at hotel in Newport News

Newport News — Police and U.S. Marshals arrested two men in connection with a shooting that killed another man over four months ago in Newport News.

Karim Deshawn Strothers-Chalk, 18, was arrested in connected with a fatal shooting that happened on April 28, 2021, in Newport News.

A man, who was a minor when the shooting happened on April 28, was arrested Wednesday in Portsmouth. His charges include first-degree murder, robbery, conspiracy to commit murder, conspiracy to commit robbery, possession of a firearm by a juvenile, use of a firearm, discharge a firearm in an occupied building, among others.

Karim Deshawn Strothers-Chalk, 18, was arrested July 29 in Portsmouth. He is charged with second-degree murder, discharge of a firearm in an occupied building, conspiracy to commit murder and use of a firearm.

The shooting happened around 4 a.m. inside a hotel in the 900 block of J Clyde Morris Boulevard, near Harpersville Road.

Officers found 18-year-old Darrius Brown Jr., of Hampton, suffering from a gunshot wound. He died at a local hospital because of his injuries, police said in a news release.

Officials did not release information about a possible motive.
