‘Hire Our Grads’ event to connect soon-to-be graduates and local employers

NORFOLK — Norfolk Public Schools partnered with the city of Norfolk and the Hampton Roads Workforce Council to host an event to connect soon-to-be graduates with employers ready to make job offers for full-time positions. The minimum pay offered is expected to be $15 per hour.

“Hire Our Grads Day” will start Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. and run until noon at the Norfolk Technical Center, at 1330 North Military Highway.

This is the first-ever event to help students in Norfolk’s Career and Technical Education programs meet and interview with more than a dozen businesses.

“All collaborative partners are very excited about what is on the horizon for ‘Hire Our Grads’,” said Kenyetta Goshen, senior director of Career and Technical Education and Adult Education Services for the school division, in a press release. “The event will have a lasting impact on Norfolk Public Schools’ graduates, local businesses, organizations, and the City of Norfolk.”

Participating businesses include Jody’s Popcorn, Craiberly Enterprises, Inc., Campostella Builders, Lyon Shipyard, Bauer Compressors, Hampton Roads Transit, Tabet Manufacturing Co. Inc., CNIC, Versus Salon, Peoples Pharmacy, Norfolk 911/EOC, Hair Cuttery, AIT, HRSD, Kitco, Top Guard Security, Fairlead, Norfolk Public Schools, The Literacy Lab and Sentara.

For students who land job offers, there will be a Signing Day event at Slover Library on June 6.

Goshen said the hope is this hiring event becomes an annual event.
