Data leak may affect patients of multiple Virginia health care providers

A debt collector that works with multiple Tidewater health providers such as Sentara Healthcare, Children’s Hospital of The King’s Daughters, Riverside Health System and Chesapeake Regional was hacked and personal data was leaked, according to information on the company’s website posted Saturday.

In early March, Newport News-based vendor Credit Control Corporation noticed unusual activity in its network. Investigations pointed to a hack that happened between March 2 and March 7, and the company began looking into what information had been copied and taken out, according to the release.

On May 3, investigators found Social Security numbers, names, addresses, account balances and other data had been copied, according to the release. It began notifying clients on May 4.

“We are also notifying individuals on behalf of our business partners and providing these individuals with an opportunity to enroll in complimentary credit monitoring and identity protection services,” the release said. “We encourage individuals to remain vigilant against incidents of identity theft and fraud, to review account statements and explanation of benefits forms, and to monitor free credit reports for suspicious activity and to detect errors.”

Other clients affected by the hack include Pariser Dermatology Specialists Inc., Chesapeake Radiology, Tidewater Physicians Multispecialty Group, UVA Health System, VCU Health System, Valley Health and Mary Washington Healthcare, according to the release.

CCC has set up an assistance line at 866-347-3197 open Monday through Friday 9 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
