Virginia reports 1,300 new coronavirus cases Saturday

The Virginia Department of Health reported 1,300 new coronavirus cases Saturday, bringing the state’s tally to 132,940.

At least 2,722 Virginians have died from the virus, up 11 from Friday.

Of the total cases, 126,850 are confirmed and 6,090 are probable, meaning those patients are symptomatic and have had a known exposure to the illness.

Throughout the state, there have been 9,877 cases in long-term care facilities and 1,401 deaths.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive PCR tests — the common diagnostic test which detects the virus — rose slightly to 7.8%. Just one Hampton Roads district was at or above 10% — Western Tidewater at 10.7%.

Virginia reported 15,910 new PCR tests were performed, increasing the total to 1,744,020.

As many as 995 people are hospitalized for COVID-19, according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Of those, 723 have confirmed cases and 272 are awaiting test results. So far, a total of 16,276 COVID-19 patients have been discharged.

The VDH has occasionally reported a decrease in the number of deaths for a locality in the daily reports. When asked about it, a spokesman for the state’s health department said some data may be entered incorrectly, or the department will find out later that the patient lived in another city.

  • 30-39: 23,216 cases (up 142), 26 deaths (no change)
  • 20-29: 27,386 cases (up 337), 5 deaths (no change)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 68,317 women have had cases and 1,312 women have died, while 63,756 men have had cases and 1,401 men have died. Of the state tally, 867 cases don’t have a reported sex and nine deaths don’t have a reported sex.
