As coronavirus cases surge across the commonwealth and the nation, some businesses and agencies will require people to wear masks indoors.

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention suggests that people in areas with higher levels of community spread should mask up indoors regardless of vaccination status. The federal health agency tracks the virus’ spread for each state, city and county using its data tracker.

There are four levels for community transmission — low, moderate, substantial and high. Public health experts encourage mask-wearing in places where the virus’ spread is substantial or high.

A recent CDC investigation showed some fully vaccinated people can contract a more contagious mutation known as the the delta variant.

As of Aug. 13, there have been 4,056 “breakthrough” cases and 52 deaths across the commonwealth among those fully vaccinated. The number of breakthrough cases account for .086% of nearly 4.7 million vaccinated Virginians, according to state health department data.

Although fully vaccinated people can become infected with COVID-19, public health officials say they are less likely to develop severe infection or die.

Virginians are not required to wear masks in areas where the virus is thriving at higher rates, but Gov. Ralph Northam said on Twitter that people across the commonwealth “should consider wearing a mask in public indoor settings where there is increased risk of #COVID19 transmission.”

Below is an alphabetically-ordered list of institutions in Hampton Roads requiring patrons to wear masks inside their facilities.

Old Dominion University

Old Dominion University is the latest college to update its indoor mask policy as the spread of the delta variant increases. University President Brian Hemphill addressed the changes in press release Wednesday, Aug. 11.

ODU will follow the up-to-date recommendations of the CDC requiring students and faculty to wear face masks in all indoor public spaces, including classrooms, facilities and buildings until further notice. Their policy will go into effect Aug. 16.

All on-campus students, faculty and staff will be required to be vaccinated by Sept. 1. Exemptions can be requested for medical reasons or religious beliefs. All unvaccinated individuals, including those with exemptions, will be subject to required weekly testing.

In addition to the measures all symptomatic students, faculty and staff must be tested and follow university protocols before being cleared to return.
