1,127 new coronavirus cases reported in Virginia

Virginia reported 1,127 new coronavirus cases and 13 additional deaths Friday, according to data from the state Department of Health.

In all, the state has seen a total of 82,364 cases, which includes 79,253 confirmed cases and 3,111 probable ones, which means those patients are symptomatic and have a known exposure to the virus.

As of Friday morning, a total of 2,067 people had died of the illness, VDH data shows.

Virginia’s long-term care facilities have seen 7,721 cases and 1,199 deaths.

A total of 987,188 tests had been performed in the state as of Friday, an increase of 18,043 new tests from the previous day, according to the state health department. The seven-day percentage of positive tests decreased Friday, from 7.7% to 7.5%.

Some 1,250 people were hospitalized for COVID-19 in the state as of Friday — including 799 confirmed cases and 451 awaiting test results, according to figures from the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

A total of 10,576 COVID-19 patients have been discharged from Virginia hospitals. On Friday morning, 21% of the state’s ventilators were being used.

In Virginia, people 80 and older account for the highest number of deaths with 1,030. People in their 20s and 30s, however, account for the highest number of cases, followed by those in their 40s. Here’s how cases and deaths break down by age group:

  • 80 and older: 4,006 cases; 1,030 deaths
  • 70-79: 4,067 cases, 521 deaths
  • 60-69: 7,789 cases, 310 deaths
  • 50-59: 12,017 cases, 128 deaths
  • 40-49: 13,976 cases, 56 deaths
  • 30-39: 15,135 cases, 16 deaths
  • 20-29: 15,349 cases, 4 deaths
  • 10-19: 6,274 cases, 0 deaths
  • 0-9: 2,830 cases, 0 deaths

The VDH did not report ages for 921 cases and two deaths.

Here are the seven-day percentages of tests that were positive for the Health Districts around Hampton Roads:

  • Chesapeake: 12.8% (no change)
  • Eastern Shore: 6.2% (up)
  • Hampton: 10.1% (down)
  • Norfolk: 14.9% (down)
  • Peninsula: 10.3% (down)
  • Portsmouth: 18.4% (up)
  • Virginia Beach: 11.5% (down)
  • Western Tidewater: 9.6% (down)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 41,968 women have had cases and 1,026 women have died, while 39,905 men have had cases and 1,037 men have died. Of the state tally, 491 cases don’t have a reported sex and 4 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
