Virginia reports 953 new coronavirus cases, 41 deaths Saturday

The Virginia Department of Health reported 953 new coronavirus cases Saturday, bringing the state’s tally to 139,655.

At least 2,990 Virginians have died from the virus, up 41 from Friday.

Of the total cases, 132,966 are confirmed and 6,689 are probable, meaning those patients have symptoms and a known exposure to the illness.

In Virginia, there have been 10,201 cases in long-term care facilities and 1,478 deaths.

The state’s seven-day percentage of positive polymerase chain reaction, or PCR, tests — the common diagnostic test that detects the virus — declined to 6.2%. Two Hampton Roads health districts were above that: Portsmouth at 9% and Western Tidewater at 10.9%.

Virginia reported 35,043 new PCR tests were performed, increasing the total to 1,866,666.

As many as 960 people are hospitalized for COVID-19, according to the Virginia Hospital and Healthcare Association.

Of those, 661 have confirmed cases and 299 are awaiting test results. So far, a total of 16,848 COVID-19 patients have been discharged.

Here are the latest numbers for the region compared with Friday. The larger number represents the number of cases reported in each locality since the pandemic began.

The department noted there is a data backlog for death data, and officials are working to identify COVID-19-related deaths using death certificates.

The state has occasionally reported a decrease in the numbers for a locality in the daily reports. When asked about it, a spokesman for the health department said some data may be initially entered incorrectly.

In Virginia, people older than 80 account for 6,058 (up 59) cases and 1,440 deaths (up 19). Here’s how the rest of the age groups break down for cases and deaths:

  • 70-79: 6,784 cases (up 51), 759 deaths (up 6)
  • 60-69: 12,776 cases (up 74), 467 deaths (up 11)
  • 50-59: 19,560 cases (up 120), 204 deaths (up 2)
  • 40-49: 21,730 cases (up 117), 84 deaths (up 2)
  • 30-39: 24,133 cases (up 130), 28 deaths (no change)
  • 20-29: 28,973 cases (up 223), 6 deaths (up 1)
  • 10-19: 13,382 cases (up 135), 0 deaths (no change)
  • 0-9: 5,054 cases (up 41), 0 deaths (no change)

  • Virginia Beach: 5.2% (up)
  • Western Tidewater: 10.9% (up)

Since the pandemic began in Virginia, 71,721 women have had the disease and 1,446 women have died, while 67,011 men have had it and 1,533 men have died. Of the state tally, 923 cases don’t have a reported sex and 11 deaths don’t have a reported sex.
