Hampton to delay pilot program limiting access to I-64 East near HRBT at Settlers Landing Road

Hampton decided to delay a pilot program to limit access to the ramp leading from Settlers Landing Road to eastbound Interstate 64 during rush hour.

The City Council approved the plan May 11, but Mayor Donnie Tuck last week said the program would be pushed back to later in the summer.

The city plans to limit access to the Settlers Landing Road eastbound I-64 ramp from 3-6 p.m. on weekdays coming from Hampton University for a month, then switch to limit traffic coming from Woodland Road for a month.

No changes are planned for drivers heading west or entering the city.

The city has been weighing its options to prevent gridlock on city streets with overflow traffic coming off the highway to avoid backups related to the Hampton Roads Bridge-Tunnel.

The pilot was originally supposed to begin in June, but the new start date has not been released.
