Hampton Roads Transit will offer free public transportation on Election Day

A file photo from July 2018 shows 28 new buses Hampton Roads Transit bought from California-based manufacturer Gillig.

Hampton Roads Transit will waive public transportation fares on Election Day in an effort to encourage people to vote.

Residents can ride buses, the light rail, the ferry and paratransit services, which provide public transportation for disabled residents, for free on Nov. 3.

Tom Holden, a spokesperson for the organization, said this is the first time that he can recall free fares on Election Day.
