Surf’s up! Summer season gets underway at Jennette’s Pier in Nags Head

June’s warm ocean waters lure cobia and king mackerel to Jennette’s Pier. Pin-rig, live-bait anglers spend long days waiting for the bite while sight casters try to pick one off quickly.

The Fritz Boyden Memorial Annual Youth Tournament happens on June 14. Children love this free event sponsored by the Nags Head Surf Fishing Club.

Winners are awarded trophies and fishing poles for the longest fish of around 10 species. Dozens of door prizes are given out during the free luncheon in Oceanview Hall.

Another fun event happens the next morning when OBX Running Company holds its first of three 5K beach runs with 8 a.m. starts. The others are July 13 and Aug. 10.
