Theater: The Lost Colony | June 2, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8

Venerable symphonic play about first English settlers on Roanoke Island, an Outer Banks institution for more than 80 years. Outdoor, open-air play runs six nights per week until late August. Gates open 7:30 p.m., house opens 8 p.m., curtain drops 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Friday, Saturday features Native-American pre-show at 8 p.m. Backstage tours also available. Tickets $40, $35, $25. Street fest: First Friday | June 2

Downtown Manteo’s monthly, family-friendly get together features live music, artisans, open shops and a casual vibe, all within walking distance of the waterfront. Dare Arts Council also opens exhibit of work from queer artists – Outside Straight Lines – in celebration of Pride Month. Reception from 6-8 p.m., where visitors can meet artists. Weekend-long, family-friendly bash that celebrates all things Ocracoke. Major fundraiser for island’s education and arts communities. Festival: Dare Days | June 3-4

Two days of family-friendly activities and celebration of the county’s bounty in Manteo. Saturday events in downtown Manteo from 11 a.m.-7 p.m. Vendors, artisans, live music, entertainment, expansive kids zone. Dine and shop among many local businesses. Sunday event from 3-5 p.m. at Pea Island Cookhouse on Sir Walter Raleigh St. Gospel concert, praise music from local churches, local sweets and treats, and Pea Island Preservation Society shares some history of area. Music: Mama’s Black Sheep | June 5, 8

Nature: Butterfly Release | June 6, 8

Every Tuesday and Thursday throughout summer, staff at Elizabethan Gardens in Manteo conducts butterfly clinics and releases. First flights, what they eat, lifespans, what plants attract them to gardens. Tickets $25 for program in addition to regular admission fee. Tickets must be purchased online seven days in advance. Horses: Mustang Mornings | June 7

Corolla Wild Horse Fund opens gates to public on Wednesdays at its farm in Grandy on the mainland, where staff cares for rescued horses from Corolla herd. Included is free movie screening of documentary about horses and life on the island, and interaction with staff, horses. $10 donation suggested. 10 a.m.-2 p.m. every Wednesday. History: Breeches Buoy Drill | June 8

Staff at the Chicamacomico Life-Saving Station in Rodanthe re-enact traditional, land-based ocean rescues that routinely occurred from late 18th to mid-20th century, every Thursday until Labor Day. Visitors learn about Lyle Guns and shot lines and hawsers and breeches buoys, as well as bravery and training of surfmen. Museum hours 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday-Friday.
