Truck and SUV collide on U.S. 158, causing truck to flip over and catch fire

POWELLS POINT, N.C. — A box truck and an SUV collided Monday morning on U.S. 158 in Powells Point causing traffic to back up for miles.

The box truck flipped on its side and caught fire on the side of the road. The white SUV came a stop just off the pavement badly dented and windshield shattered.

Debris from the wreck was scattered over the highway and roadside for about 100 yards.

An official at the scene said there were no fatalities, but people were transported to a hospital with injuries.

Firefighters extinguished the truck fire within about 30 minutes after the accident. Neighbors at the scene said they heard a loud boom when then accident happened just before 10 a.m.

Officials had not spoken to witnesses and were not clear on what caused the collision that happened about four miles north of the Wright Memorial Bridge.

Northbound traffic on U.S. 158 was stopped and backed up for as far as could be seen. Southbound traffic was also backed up, but could pass through on one lane.
