Art: Mollie Fearing Memorial Art Show | May 7-27

Twenty-sixth annual art show in honor of local art patron and one of Dare Arts founders. Works in multiple media judged. Ceramicist Ashley Paskov from Columbia, North Carolina, will judge. Fishing: Hatteras Village Offshore Open | May 9-13

Opening event of NC Billfish Series. Tournament proceeds support Hatteras Village Civic Association, which provides college scholarships and contributes to local charitable causes. Cash prizes, trophies, plaques awarded for multiple levels: billfish; tuna, dolphin, wahoo; blue marlin. Commemoration: British Cemetery Ceremony | May 12

Annual Ocracoke ceremony honoring British sailors killed when German submarine sank their ship, HMT Bedfordshire, off N.C. coast on May 11, 1942. Representatives from British Royal Navy and Royal Canadian Navy, as well as U.S. Coast Guard, attend. Ceremony at 11 a.m., followed by light lunch at Ocracoke Community Center. Nation’s oldest hang-gliding competition enters 51st year. Dozens of pilots expected (approximately 100 attended last year) for event based at Jockey’s Ridge State Park in Nags Head and Cotton Gin in Jarvisburg. Registration for pilots from $50 to $100.
