The Pilot is exploring Norfolk’s ‘Dividing Lines.’ Here’s how you can help.

St. Paul's Boulevard, near the center of this photo, divides some of Norfolk's public housing communities from the heart of downtown.

Norfolk — Norfolk’s segregation has impacted a huge swath of Norfolk’s residents, whether they recognize it or not.

It can be a tough topic to discuss.

In our effort to continue our reporting on this topic — and in recognition that we don’t know everything, or close to it — we want to hear from you.

We’re hoping to bring people together for live discussion. The pandemic has changed that, at least temporarily, but we still want to host a town hall-style forum via Microsoft Teams where people can log on and share their stories with us and their neighbors.

That’s scheduled for 7 p.m. Feb. 18, and you can log in at that time at tinyurl.com/dividinglinesforum.

Today's Top Stories

Daily

Start your morning in-the-know with the day's top stories.

We’re not interested in giving a lecture — we hope you’ll read our work, which will speak for itself, at PilotOnline.com/projects/dividing-lines. We’ll obviously be happy to answer questions about our reporting, but we’re really interested in hearing from the community.

We want people to tell us their thoughts on the city’s divisions, their experiences, their stories. We want to hear how the city’s history, and its current level of segregation, have affected its people.

More than anything, we want to get people talking.

You can reach out in any number of ways. Our emails and phone numbers will appear on every story. We’ve made a specific form where you can submit a statement at tinyurl.com/dividinglinestip. Feel free to share that link far and wide.

So reach out, any way you feel comfortable. We’d love to hear from you.
