The Virginian-Pilot has spent the past few weeks publishing the first wave of Dividing Lines, an ongoing project exploring racial segregation past and present in Norfolk.
We’ve shown how the city is divided and dug into some of the history of how the city became segregated by race.
We’ve also looked at contemporary issues, such as how Norfolk’s schools were re-segregated and where people are ending up as they’re moved out of public housing to make way for redevelopment. (You can read the series at PilotOnline.com/dividinglines.)
But this isn’t an issue that’s only visible from 10,000 feet up. We know that many residents of Norfolk and the region have personal stories of how the city’s dividing lines have impacted them.
Thursday night, we invite you to tell those stories.

The Virginian-Pilot will host a virtual town hall starting at 7 p.m. on Feb. 18 for community members to have an open discussion about Norfolk’s history, it’s divisions and their personal experiences.
Ryan Murphy and Sara Gregory, the reporters behind the Pilot’s “Dividing Lines” project, will host along with their editor, Eric Hartley, and Johnny Finn, a geographer from Christopher Newport University who contributed to the project.
If you’ve got questions about the project, like how it came about or how we reported it, we’ll be happy to answer those questions. But we really want to hear from the community, to hear from those who have dealt with the issues we’ve been writing about, or those who want to learn more.
And we plan to do more such events — including in person, when it’s safe.
We’re not interested in lecturing. We’re interested in listening.
