College baseball roundup: No 5 UVA silences ODU with dominant pitching

Ethan O’Donnell hit a three-run homer to cap a seven-run second inning and No. 5 Virginia rolled to an 8-1 victory over Old Dominion in a college baseball game Tuesday at Disharoon Park in Charlottesville.

It was a disappointing result for the Monarchs (20-5), who came into the game ranked third in the country with 57 home runs and tied for fourth with 255 runs.

It was the first ranked team ODU faced this season.

The Cavaliers chased Monarchs starter Robert Cook (2-1) in the second inning. Henry Godbout got things started with a two-run single up the middle. Griff O’Ferrall followed with an RBI single before O’Donnell’s homer made it 6-0. Ethan Anderson finished the inning with a run-scoring groundout.

UVA starter Connelly Early (6-0) and five relievers shut down ODU’s vaunted offense, limiting the Monarchs to five hits and striking them out 12 times. Early tossed two scoreless innings and Chase Hungate followed with another 1.1 scoreless innings.

ODU scored its lone run in the fifth inning on Tyler Wheeler’s RBI double down the left-field line off reliever Bradley Hodges. But the Cavaliers got a combined four shutout innings from Kevin Jaxel, Jay Woolfolk and Jake Berry the rest of the way.

UVA (23-2) improved to 17-0 at home this season.

The Monarchs will visit Georgia Southern for a three-game weekend series beginning at 6:30 p.m. Friday. UVA will visit rival Virginia Tech in a three-game series starting at 8 p.m. Friday.

William & Mary 3, No. 15 Campbell 2: Nate Knowles, Zach Tsakounis and Carter Lovasz combined on a three-hitter as the host Tribe edged a Camels squad ranked third in the country in runs.

W&M scored all three of its runs in the third inning on Lucas Carmichael’s RBI single and Max Winters’ two-run single.

Campbell (17-4) got its runs on Trenton Harris’ solo homer and Tyler Halstead’s RBI single in the fifth.

Knowles (3-2), Tsakounis and Lovasz each tossed three innings, with Knowles allowing no hits.

The Tribe will host St. John’s for a three-game series beginning at 6 p.m. Friday.

VCU 13, Norfolk State 4: Brandon Eike hit a three-run homer and Cooper Benzin added two hits and two RBIs as the Rams (13-12) rolled over the Spartans (3-19) at home.

Cam Mazell paced NSU by going 3 for 4 with two RBIs.

Starter Goleski (1-0) picked up the victory for VCU, allowing three runs on three hits in five innings.

The Spartans will host Stonehill in a three-game series beginning at 3 p.m. Friday.

No. 13 Randolph-Macon 7, Virginia Wesleyan 5 (12 innings): Carter Johnson hit a go-ahead two-run single in the top of the 12th inning and the Yellow Jackets (17-4) held on for a victory in Virginia Beach.

The Marlins (4-16-1) scored all of their runs in the third inning. Trent Hanchey hit a three-run homer and Tanner Clements followed with a two-run shot. Clements finished with three hits, while Hanchey and Thomas Crandall had two each.

Reliever Cole Stamm (1-0) picked up the victory for Randolph-Macon with 3.2 scoreless innings.

VWU will visit No. 5 Shenandoah for a noon doubleheader Saturday.

No. 12 Christopher Newport 6, Pfeiffer 0: Jack Braley, Kyle Lewis and Danny Checkosky combined on a six-hit shutout as the Captains (24-6) rolled at home.

Josh Reinhold, Justin Bowers and Alec Reilly each drove in two runs for CNU.

Braley (3-0) went seven innings and allowed all six hits with two strikeouts. Lewis and Checkosky tossed a hitless inning each.

The Captains will visit No. 11 Lynchburg at 3 p.m. today.

Virginia Tech 9, VMI 7: Jack Hurley hit two of Virginia Tech’s five homers, but the Hokies (15-9) needed a three-run ninth inning to hold off VMI (14-12) at home.

Garrett Michel, former Ocean Lakes High star Carson DeMartini and Carson Jones also went deep for the Hokies.

Virginia Tech starter Grant Umberger allowed a run on one hit in four innings, but reliever Jonah Hurney (2-1) picked up the victory.

Michel, Hurley and DeMartini each hit solo homers in the ninth to break a 6-6 tie. Hurley finished 2 for 5 with three RBIs.

The Hokies will host No. 5 Virginia in a three-game series starting at 8 p.m. Friday.
