The Cavaliers have reached the College World Series five times since 2009, tied for the second-most among any programs.

All three programs coming to Charlottesville have played there in a regional: Army (2012, 2013), East Carolina (2011, 2016) and Oklahoma (2012). The Sooners beat UVA in a 2010 three-game Super Regional in Charlottesville.

Besides the Cavaliers, the only other team from the state in the field of 64 was Atlantic 10 champion George Mason (34-25), which was sent to play national top seed Wake Forest (47-10) in the first round at 7 p.m. Friday.

The other game in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, will pit Maryland (41-19) against Northeastern (44-14), which gained an at-large bid as the Colonial Athletic Association’s No. 3 seed and its runner-up.

CAA champion UNC Wilmington (34-21) will face Duke (35-21) at 1 p.m. Friday in Conway, South Carolina, where host Coastal Carolina (39-19), the No. 10 seed, will meet Rider (35-19) at 7. The Chanticleers joined Sun Belt rivals Southern Miss, Troy and Louisiana in the field of 64.
