Syracuse deals first-place Tides just their second shutout defeat of season

Syracuse handed the Norfolk Tides just their second shutout loss of the season, beating them 1-0 Friday night before 7,761 at Harbor Park.

The Mets (18-26) won for the second day in a row against the International League-leading Tides (30-12) and evened the six-game series at two wins apiece heading into Saturday’s 6:35 p.m. clash.

Left-hander Joey Lucchesi, who spent the early part of the year in the majors with manager Buck Showalter’s New York team, got the victory by holding the Tides to four hits in six innings. Zach Muckenhirn and Nathan Lavender completed the six-hitter.

Tides starter Drew Rom (4-2) gave up eight hits and two walks in 5 2/3 innings but held Syracuse to one run. Dillon Tate, Darwinzon Hernandez and Logan Gillaspie shut out the Mets in the last 3 1/3 innings.

In the fifth, one of New York’s top prospects, Ronny Mauricio, singled to center and went to second when DJ Stewart walked. Jaylin Davis then singled off shortstop Jordan Westburg’s glove, allowing Mauricio to score.

The Tides are scheduled to start lefty Bruce Zimmermann on the mound Saturday.
