Tides erase six-run deficit, end skid at two by rocking Syracuse

Tides first baseman Josh Lester, shown celebrating an April game, had plenty more to enjoy after his four-RBI game Saturday night against Syracuse at Harbor Park.

The adversity didn’t last long for the Norfolk Tides.

Possessing a two-game losing streak and a six-run deficit, the International League leaders erupted to defeat the Syracuse Mets 12-7 Saturday night before 8,798 at Harbor Park.

The Tides (31-12) produced 10 extra-base hits as they took a 3-2 lead in a series whose concluding game is set for 1:05 p.m. Sunday.

Norfolk climbed from a 7-1 hole with a six-run third inning that included Jordan Westburg’s RBI double, Josh Lester’s two-run double and Lewin Diaz’s three-run homer.

Daz Cameron’s two-run double in the fourth gave the Tides the lead to stay.

As often has been the case this season, Norfolk found contributions up and down the lineup as its top eight batters hit safely.

Lester homered, drove in four runs and scored two. Westburg scored three runs and drove in one. Anthony Bemboom had two hits and two RBIs. Robbie Glendinning, a 27-year-old Australian who was making his Norfolk debut after being acquired for cash from the Kansas City Royals, was 1 for 3 with a run.

The Mets fell to 18-26 despite three hits from Luis Guillorme, who has 674 games of MLB experience, and two RBIs each from Ronny Mauricio and Jaylin Davis. Mauricio and Danny Mendick had two hits apiece.

Noah Denoyer (1-0) gained the victory, pitching two scoreless innings after Syracuse roughed up starter Bruce Zimmermann for seven runs (four earned) and eight hits in three innings. Ofreidy Gomez (in his Tides debut), Nick Vespi and Reed Garrett joined Denoyer to combine for the Norfolk relief corps’ six scoreless innings.

Eric Orze (1-2) took the loss after giving up two runs and four hits in 2 2/3 innings, the longest stint Saturday by any Met.
