Tides’ winning streak ends at six against rehabbing pitcher Tyler Glasnow, Durham

Tides pitcher Cole Irvin, shown April 23, got through seven innings Friday night but took a loss to Durham.

Playing as the “Pajaritos de Norfolk” amid a Cinco de Mayo promotion celebrating Latin culture, the Tides saw their six-game winning streak end Friday night with a 2-1 loss to the Durham Bulls before 6,028 at Harbor Park.

The International League-heading Tides, who left five runners on base in the last two innings, still lead the six-game series 3-1 entering Saturday’s 6:35 p.m. contest.

Norfolk starter Cole Irvin (3-1), who began the season with the parent Baltimore Orioles, absorbed his first Triple-A defeat of the year despite a solid outing. He lasted seven innings, giving up four hits and no walks. Cole Uvila and Darwinzon Hernandez pitched a scoreless inning each.

With two out in the sixth, Osleivis Basabe doubled and scored on Vidal Brujan’s single to break a scoreless tie. Rene Pinto slugged a home run to left-center field in the seventh.

Durham’s pitching was even better. Tyler Glasnow, coming back from Tommy John elbow surgery on a rehabilitation assignment from the Tampa Bay Rays, struck out four in 2 1/3 scoreless innings despite two walks. Winner Evan McKendry (3-0) pitched 4 2/3 innings, yielding three hits and two walks but no runs.

Norfolk got to reliever Trevor Kelley in the eighth but couldn’t break through to tie or go ahead. Jordan Westburg singled, Josh Lester reached on catcher’s interference, and Joey Ortiz grounded an RBI double to right field. That put Tides on second and third with none out, but Lewin Diaz flew out, and second baseman Brujan threw out Lester at the plate on Shayne Fontana’s grounder. Anthony Bemboom’s flyout to left field ended the threat.

Norfolk then loaded the bases against Josh Roberson in the ninth, thanks to singles by Connor Norby and Westburg and an error, but Ortiz grounded out to shortstop to end the game.
