Warm temperatures prompt Wintergreen Resort to conclude season on Sunday

Virginia’s Wintergreen Resort will wrap up its 2022-23 ski season early because of recent warm temperatures.

“In spite of a valiant effort to keep the ski season going by making snow at every opportunity, we’ve made the difficult decision to conclude the 2022-2023 winter season this Sunday, Feb. 26 at 5 p.m.,” a tweet from the resort reads.

On Thursday, several heat records were broken across the region. In Norfolk, temperatures recorded Thursday at Norfolk International Airport reached at least 80 degrees and broke the all-time record for Feb. 23, according to the National Weather Service.

Last season, skiing and riding ended on March 13 after warmer weather affected the slopes. Snow tubing for this winter season got started Nov. 25, and skiers and riders returned to the resort Dec. 20. According to the resort, the typical climate of the area has colder temperatures in winter.

When combined with the mountain’s elevation of 3,850 feet, temperatures usually provide “excellent snowmaking conditions” December through March.
