Region/state roundup: CNU golfer Alex Price wins Division III Nicklaus Award

Christopher Newport’s Alex Price earned the highest honor in NCAA men’s golf, being named the Division III Jack Nicklaus Award winner on Tuesday.

The award recognizes the top collegiate golfers at all levels.

Nicklaus himself will present the awards to Price and the other winners during Sunday’s final round of the Memorial Tournament in Dublin, Ohio.

Price, a four-time All-American from Hillsboro, tied for second at the NCAA Division III National Championships. It gave him eight top-five finishes in nine events this season.

He was also named to the Palmer Cup team as the lone non-Division I player.

Florida edges UVA in NCAA quarterfinals

No. 2 seed Florida edged No. 7 seed Virginia 3-2 during the quarterfinal round of match play at the NCAA Championships on Tuesday in Scottsdale, Arizona.

The match wasn’t decided until the 18th hole of the final match, when the Gators’ Yuxin Lin rallied to defeat the Cavaliers’ George Duangmanee 2-up. Lin won the final three holes.

It was still UVA’s best NCAA finish after it placed 10th in 2017.

The Cavaliers got victories from Bryan Lee and Deven Patel. Lee handed newly-crowned NCAA individual champion Fred Biondi a 6-and-5 defeat, while Patel won 1-up over Matthew Kress.

Colorado State DB headed to ODU

Colorado State defensive back Langston Williams has committed to Old Dominion as a transfer, he announced on Twitter.

The 5-9, 165-pounder from Aurora, Colorado, saw limited action in three games last season.

Fuller, Wilson among VT Hall class

All-American Kyle Fuller and single-season rushing leader David Wilson are among the seven newest members of the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame.

Fuller was the No. 14 overall pick in the 2014 NFL Draft and Wilson was the 2011 ACC Player of the Year.

Also selected for the 2023 class: Bob Bowman, a three-sport athlete that earned 12 varsity letters, Malcolm Delaney, a two-time AP All-American in basketball, Carrie Mason, the Hokies’ all-time leader in 3-pointers in women’s basketball, Jazmine Reeves, who was Tech’s first Hermann Trophy semifinalist in women’s soccer, and Alexander Ziegler, a three-time NCAA champion in track and field.

The class will be honored during the weekend of the Hokies’ Sept. 9 football game against Purdue.

COLLEGE TRACK AND FIELD

HU’s Blackman qualifies for NCAAs

Hampton’s Dugion Blackman has qualified for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field National Championships in in the 800-meter run.

The championships will be held June 7–10 in Austin, Texas.

The Jamaica native finished second in his heat with a mark of 1:51.61. He won the CAA title in the 800 earlier this season.

* Christopher Newport baseball players Zach Dzarnowski and Dylan Weber each earned All-Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association and D3baseball.com, while Kyle Lewis also picked up accolades from D3baseball.com. Dzarnowski was on the ABCA/Rawlings All-Region first team and the D3baseball.com second team. Weber was on the third team for both, and Lewis joined him on the third team for D3baseball.com.
