2 tornadoes confirmed in Suffolk on Christmas Eve

Suffolk — The National Weather Service confirmed two EF1 tornadoes struck in Suffolk on Christmas Eve, damaging seven homes.

The first tornado touched down on Corinth Chapel Road and ended west of the intersection of Corinth Chapel and Gates roads at at 11:22 p.m. Thursday. The tornado reached 90 mph. It caused significant damage to at least one house and several large trees, and flipped one pickup truck, the NWS said.

A second tornado caused significant damage to at least six homes along Dutch Road. Several trees were uprooted, the NWS said. It touched down at 11:28 p.m. near Dutch Road in the southwest portion of the city, and ended at 11:31 p.m. on Lummis Road just north of the intersection with Box Elder Road. Winds reached 95-100 mph. The tornado’s path spanned 2.2 miles.

EF1s are considered weak tornadoes that have wind speeds between 86-110 mph. No injuries were reported, but the city said six people were displaced from their homes.
