Flash flood warning issued for parts of Hampton Roads; about 640 without power

A flash flood warning has been issued for Chesapeake, Norfolk and Portsmouth and remains in effect until 5:15 p.m. Saturday.

Heavy rain fell Saturday afternoon, and two to three inches of rain came down in some spots over the course of an hour, according to the National Weather Service.

Shortly before 3 p.m., the weather service the heaviest rain had ended, but flash flooding was either ongoing or expected to start soon.

Shortly before 5 p.m., about 640 people were without power in the region, according to a Dominion Energy online outage map. More than 4,600 had been without power at one point in the afternoon.

According to the weather service, the following areas can expect flooding:

  • In Chesapeake: Bowers Hill; Deep Creek; Portlock; South Norfolk; Western Branch
  • In Norfolk: downtown Norfolk; Ghent; Naval Station Norfolk; Norfolk State University; Norview; Ocean View; Old Dominion University; Wards Corner; Willoughby Spit
  • In Portsmouth: Churchland; Cradock; downtown Portsmouth
