Flea market will have you fishing for great deals

Eddie Ruediger of Norfolk searches for a new rod at the 2017 Great Bridge Fisherman's Association's annual Fishing Flea Market at the Chesapeake Convention Center.

Beginner and expert anglers will find all the tackle they need — along with rods, reels, lures and boats — at decent prices at the Great Bridge Fisherman’s Association’s 11th Annual Fishing Flea Market.

The bait and boat bazaar will be held from 8 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. March 14 at the Chesapeake Conference Center, 700 Conference Center Drive in Greenbrier.

Fishermen and women of all levels can shop for a variety of new and used fresh and saltwater fishing equipment; gear and accoutrements including rods, reels, poles and lures; and boats and trailers.

Whether you fish off a pier or in the surf, inshore or offshore, chances are this grand marketplace will have it. Last year, about 3,000 people browsed through the wares of more than 100 vendors. Organizers are expecting more of both for this year’s event.

Come hungry and thirsty. The show will also offer a variety of hot foods and cold refreshments for sale.

The GBFA has been luring individuals to the sport of fishing for years. It was formed “to introduce new anglers to the sport of recreational fishing while promoting conservation of our resources,” the charter on its website states.

The organization presents a variety of events and programs including the annual Fishing Flea Market as well as club tournaments, oyster roasts, fishing excursions and various community outreach initiatives including its Wish a Fish scholarship program, party boat fishing for seniors and disabled individuals and support for Hope House and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Tickets to the market are $3 per person. Ages 12 and younger are free. For more details about the flea market and the GBFA, call 287-0330, 421-7333 or 685-6823.

HAUTE COUTURE, HAUTE CUISINE

One of Chesapeake’s “haute-ist” events is coming up — the Great Bridge Woman’s Club’s annual Spring Fashion Show, Luncheon and Basket Raffle.

The stylish and tasty fundraiser is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. April 4 at the Greenbrier Country Club, 1301 Volvo Parkway. Tickets, now on sale, are $45 per person, and they go fast.

Proceeds will benefit the club’s community service projects and its scholarship program for high school seniors.

The GBWC is a local affiliate of the national General Federation of Women’s Clubs. It was formed “to enhance the cultural, educational, social, civic and charitable welfare of the community and beyond through donations and volunteer service,” according to its website.

The fashionable afternoon is for all area club women, ladies who lunch and fashionistas. While dining on country club cuisine, attendees will view the latest spring fashions courtesy of Cecelia’s Boutique & Gifts at 120 N. Main St., Suffolk.

The Suffolk-based shop sells clothing, jewelry, shoes and handbags and stocks brand names such as MudPie, Piccadilly, Brighton, Frank Lyman, City Girl, A La Carte and Tia.

ARTSY AT THE LIBRARY

Two upcoming events will give young artists the chance to “grow” their own giant flowers and get adults into an abstract expressionism frame of mind.

The free workshop — from 4-5 p.m. — will have young artists create big, colorful flowers using colored chalk.

They will be inspired by the enlarged flower paintings created by O’Keeffe, dubbed “the mother of American modernism.” O’Keeffe was known for her large flowers, New York City skyscrapers, close-ups of animal skulls and New Mexico landscapes.

Then, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. March 14, those ages 18 and older are invited to an adult painting party at the Dr. Clarence V. Cuffee Library at 2726 Border Road.

This Expressionist Painting Party will offer participants the chance to reimagine or reinterpret styles by such noted female abstract expressionists as Lee Krasner, Elaine de Koonig, Mary Abbott, Joan Mitchell and Alma Thomas. Come to paint, showcase your artistic emotions and have fun. It’s all free.
