Who’s the fastest on the beach? Red Bull Quicksand race comes to Virginia Beach to find out.

VIRGINIA BEACH — The fastest race on sand is coming to Hampton Roads this weekend.

Red Bull Quicksand, a race that tests competitors’ endurance by running through sand, will be held at 3rd Street Beach in Virginia Beach on Saturday.

The race has been held all over the world, including Egypt, Kazakhstan, South Africa and the United Kingdom.

Runners will compete one the one-mile long route that is rigged with giant sand mounds, trenches and other obstacles in an attempt to sap the competitors’ energy.

According to Red Bull, runners use up to twice as more energy on sand than running on a road surface.

Competitors will race in preliminary heats, and the fastest finishers advance to the semifinals and finals.

The top 24 racers from both military and civilian categories will progress to the finals, along with eight additional runners from the “Last Chance Qualifier” heat. In the final heat, the top three male and female athletes will race to grab a finish line flag in order to secure their spot on the podium.

Registration costs $20, and the race is free to watch.
