Mental health experts offer advice on how to recognize the symptoms of secondary trauma, and ways to cope.

A handful of After-School Satan Clubs have opened across the country this year - with locations in Colorado, California, Pennsylvania, Illinois and Ohio in addition to Chesapeake.

Nearly 80 people signed up to speak at the meeting, most of whom addressed a proposed policy regarding explicit content in library materials and a resolution regarding transgender students.

For the last several months, school safety concerns have kept parents and teachers on edge across Hampton Roads. Particularly since a 6-year-old student brought a gun to school and shot his teacher in a first-grade classroom at Newport News’ Richneck Elementary in January, security measures have been top of mind.

Dulce Tapia, 16, helped organize the walkout. Tapia said it came about as a response to the gun violence the division has experienced, including at Richneck Elementary and Heritage High School.

Newport News will receive $21 million for its Huntington Middle School project, and Norfolk will receive $30 million for Maury High and $3.5 million for Booker T. Washington.

The new rules will allow for armed security officers in elementary schools, which could cut response time if there is an active threat.

U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona spent the afternoon in Hampton on Monday, speaking with high school and college students and education leaders. Cardona visited Bethel High School and Hampton University with U.S. Rep. Bobby Scott and spoke about the importance of creating college and career pathways for students.

In the Hampton program, students spend half the day learning in English, and half the day learning Spanish. Math and science are taught in Spanish, and social studies is taught in English. Language arts are taught separately in both languages.
