Fall is here! Just as the changing season brings the smell of crisp morning air, cozy cardigans on chilly evenings, falling leaves, and apples and pumpkins, it also brings The Daily Break’s annual fall bazaar guide.
The Virginian-Pilot’s longtime movie critic Mal Vincent, who died late last year, will be remembered on Turner Classic Movies March 26, as part of the network’s “31 Days of Oscar.”
The Virginian-Pilot and Daily Press asked readers to share photos of their favorite holiday ornaments and the stories behind them. We received nearly 80 entries from around Virginia and North Carolina. Stories of ornaments that are more than a century old. Pieces that have traveled around the world, through the hands of generations of relatives, some pieces so old that owners couldn’t remember where they came from — only that they were well-loved. Readers shared the traditions that now surround the ornaments — this ornament is the first to go up on the tree, or the last, or is put on the tree only by a particular person. And some ornaments are more like artwork and are hung or displayed year round now. These are the stories of pieces that began as laughs or classroom projects but are now treasured heirlooms, mementos of times and relatives lost but not forgotten.
Nutcrackers, tree lighting ceremonies, lighted boat parades, The Daily Break has the Holiday events guide to keep you busy through the end of the year.
