A century of innovations has made what was an unproved concept into a worldwide force — one that means carriers based in Hampton Roads can reach anywhere in the world, the Navy's top aviator said.

The Newport News-based health care system wants to build a 50-bed hospital at the intersection of US Route 258 and state highways 32 and 10.

“The Kearsarge is as ready as she’s ever been," said Capt. Tom Foster.

The Veterans Affairs study suggests replacing it with new centers in Norfolk and Newport News, along with the Naval hospital in Portsmouth.

Oceana had to cancel the show last year and the year before because of the pandemic, but is planning for 250,000 to 300,000 visitors at this year’s show, on September 17 and 18.

Construction of the Virginian-class sub began in 2015. It is the 10th Virginia-class submarine to be delivered by Newport News Shipbuilding and the 21st Virginia-class submarine built as part of the partnership of Newport News Shipbuilding and General Dynamics’ Electric Boatyard in Connecticut.

The service has a new focus on preparing airmen for tasks outside their specialties and to move the force to a mindset more like the expeditionary units at the Navy’s Little Creek base, the Marines who board Norfolk-based amphibious ships and the Army’s Fort Eustis-based 7th Transportation Brigade.

Paul Harris, a former member of the House of Delegates, has served as HII’s chief compliance officer since 2020.

BayPort has agreed to settle the matter by paying nearly $110,000, the Department of Justice said.
