Prompt actions by USS Dwight D. Eisenhower sailors prevented a blown transformer from sparking a major fire on the carrier.

The New Jersey is the first Virginia-class sub that was designed from the start for a crew of male and female sailors, said Jason Ward, vice president of the shipyard’s Virginia class submarine program. The vessel is scheduled to be delivered to the Navy next year.

Elaine Luria said: "This indicates an urgent need to understand if there are endemic problems within the command, safety concerns, or other contributing issues."

Langley is the only continental U.S. air base that doesn’t have a full set of runway shoulders — only 15% of its runways have them. The Air Force is seeking public comment on the plan, which would take three to five years to complete.

The four warships were commissioned between 30 and 32 years ago.

The lab’s work will support three key NASA missions: landing spacecraft safely and mapping the Moon and Mars, finding more efficient and safer ways to operate aircraft, and understanding the Earth’s atmosphere and climate.
